Thanksgiving brings to mind images of Pilgrims gathered around a simple meal, giving thanks. But have you ever wondered what dental care looked like in early America? At MVP Dental in Farmington, UT, we’re thankful for the advanced technology and effective treatments we have today — especially when we look back at what the Pilgrims went through!

Dental “Care” in Pilgrim Times

In the 1600s, there was little understanding of dental hygiene. The Pilgrims relied on folk remedies, basic tools, and even the advice of barbers to address tooth problems. There were no toothbrushes, toothpaste, or professional cleanings! Instead, Pilgrims used twigs or cloth to try to clean their teeth, but without the techniques or materials we use today, dental issues were common.

Toothaches and Remedies

For a Pilgrim, a toothache could mean serious trouble. With no way to treat cavities, decay would spread quickly, often leading to intense pain and infections. Remedies ranged from herbal concoctions to applying cloves, which we now know have mild numbing properties, to sore gums. Still, these were temporary solutions that only masked the pain rather than treating the cause.

The Barber-Surgeon: Early Dentistry

Since there were no trained dentists in the colonies, barbers took on the role of surgeons. These “barber-surgeons” would extract painful teeth when other remedies failed. Unlike today’s precise and painless procedures, these extractions were done without anesthesia, relying only on basic tools — and a lot of bravery!
